A Yooper at heart, Susan McQuaid was born and raised in Marquette, Michigan. For 19 years now, Susan has called Traverse City home; it is a place that she has come to love for its water, woods and vibrant spirit of community involvement and service. She is fortunate to have all of her family centrally located in Traverse City- husband, Tim, two daughters and five grandchildren. Susan is well known in the community as the Director of the United Way of Northwest Michigan Volunteer Center where she connects key volunteer populations in the five county area (youth, families, retirees and businesses) with volunteer opportunities among 200 area non-profits.
The Volunteer Center is a year-round volunteer clearinghouse that recruits manpower for non-profits that provide a wide range of services including, critical human services, environmental protection, arts and culture, and education. Susan knows first hand that local food pantries are in crisis, with bare shelves and an unfortunate number of hungry neighbors. She has selected the Northwest Food Coalition, a collaboration of 39 local pantries, as her charity of choice. Always up for a good challenge, Susan relishes the opportunity to “dance as if no one is looking” to benefit her hungry neighbors!
